On June 21, the Stuttering Science & Therapy Web site added a free stuttering pen pals Web page (http://www.casafuturatech.com/penpal.html). In the first 2 months, 45 persons listed requests for pen pals, and almost 500 people visited the site looking for a pen pal.
Pen pal request listings are mostly adult who stutter and some parents of children who stutter. One speech-language pathology professor had his students find stuttering pen pals to correspond with. There are requests from Australia, Japan, and Europe.
The adult stutterers looking for pen pals vary widely. Some announce they are single men or women. Others work in certain professions, such as health care or law enforcement, and are looking for someone in a similar career to share experiences. Others are seeking graduates of certain therapy programs, such as Hollins. One sent in a photo of himself at a National Stuttering Project convention. Most often people ask for support and encouragement.
