The division’s Steering Committee has been busy the past few months bringing closure to the establishment of the Specialty Commission on Fluency Disorders. Serving as the Founding Specialty Commission on Fluency Disorders, the Division 4 Steering Committee developed a policies and procedures manual for the Commission that ASHA’s Clinical Specialty Board reviewed positively. With that approval, the Commission is now authorized to initiate the fluency specialist recognition program. By the end of the summer, elections for the five-member Founding Specialty Commission will be completed. The Steering Committee’s fall will be devoted to assisting the newly elected Charter Commission in preparing for its assumption of responsibilities on January 1, 1998. By that time, each affiliate will have received an invitation to apply for specialty recognition. In addition, the availability of fluency specialist recognition will be reported in the media along with invitations to all speech-language pathologists interested in applying to become recognized as a fluency specialists.
