Once upon a time, in a faraway land called Florida, a group of sailors gathered together, from all the corners of the earth, for a conference on the great April 1998 Division 4 LeaderShip. The travel brochure promised a voyage to “Developing Guidelines for Measuring Fluency Treatment Outcomes,” and we were excited by this itinerary: stuttering measurement, treatment outcomes evaluation, and frothy tropical drinks with little paper umbrellas in them, all in the same place! Could we really dispense with all that tedious research, and just solve the problems of stuttering measurement and of stuttering treatment outcomes evaluation in one 3-day boat ride? The chance of lifetime! Or was it a little too good to be true? We found ourselves leaning toward the latter, but the only way to find out was to take the trip.
