A considerable amount of research has underscored the significant benefit of family involvement in treatment for stuttering (Conture & Melnick, 1999; Gottwald, 1999; Gottwald & Starkweather, 1999; Kelly & Conture, 1991; Langlois & Long, 1988; Winslow & Guitar, 1994; Zebrowski, 1997). Partnering with family members allows them to take an active and ongoing role in their children’s treatment programs. With the establishment of such a partnership, the speech-language pathologist and the family are free to learn from one another (Bruce, DiVenere & Bergeron, 1998; Farber & Goldstein, 1998). Families know their youngsters and are the experts when it comes to understanding the family system. Likewise, the speech-language pathologist has knowledge about the development and treatment of stuttering. When the family and the professional work collaboratively to develop and implement a treatment program, the talents of both parties are blended to enhance the effectiveness of the plan (Pearl, 1993; Rustin, 1987).
